Super Bowl I played on January 15, 1967 was actually called the First World Championship Game AFL vs. NFL. The Green Bay Packer defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10. The game was played at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. The first three Super Bowls pitted the American Football League against the supposedly unbeatable National Football League. When the New York Jets defeated the Baltimore Colts in 1969 the two leagues merged into the National Football League.
Vince Lombardi, after whom the Super Bowl trophy is named, coached the Packers to five NFL Championships and led the Packers to victory in the first two Super Bowls. Lombardi retired and returned to coach the Washington Redskins in 1970. He was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1971. The Packers dominated Super Bowl I with a great passing game led by Bart Starr completing 16 of 23 passes for 250 yards. Max McGee filling in for Boyd Dowler caught seven passes for 138 yards. The Packers scored three touchdowns in the second half the first following a 50-yard interception return by all pro safety Willie Wood. Running back Elijah Pitts ran for two scores.
All the Chiefs points came in the second quarter, the only touchdown on a 7-yard pass from Lenny Dawson to Curtis McClinton. Starr’s passing performance earned him the Super Bowl most valuable player trophy. The Green Bay Packers collected 15,000 and the Kansas City Chiefs 7,500 which at the time was the largest single game payout in team sports history. Green Bay continued their NFL dominance and defeated the Oakland Raiders 33-14 in Super Bowl II.
