Champ the Water Monster

In the Scottish Highlands, there is a fresh water lake that local inhabitants claim is home to one of the most famous ladies in the world. She is known as the Loch Ness Monster, but her friends call her Nessie.

On the other side of the world, in a small lake in Vermont called Lake Champlain, you can find her older brother. He may not be as famous as his sister, but his fans love him just as much. His name is Champ and he has been a legend in the area longer than his more famous sister. Champy, as his friends like to call him, made his public debut back in the early part of the 1600s. It took many years for Champ to build up a following, mostly because there were not that many people in the area.

As the population grew, so did Champ's fame. With little more then three hundred appearances, Champ is a bit of a recluse. He is not one to seek celebrity status, but it has followed him anyway. Like his sister, people have been trying for years to catch a glimpse of Champ. Scientists have brought all of their tools to bear in search of the elusive star. There has been conjecture and theory on where he came from, and some scientists say he is not even real.

Champ has become a local legend, and people from across the world have come to visit him, hoping for the chance to capture a picture of their elusive star. The Lake Champlain Land Trust understands that there may be no proof of Champ, but it does not keep them from honoring him. Science does not know what Champ may be; he could be a dinosaur or he could just be a dream. To the locals, he is a very special friend.
