Beer brewing goes back almost 5000 years and was done in the home. Actual beer production facilities began when monasteries and other Christian institutions started making beer to use as payment for things that they needed. The oldest brewery is thought to be the Weihenstephan brewery in Freising, Bavaria.
Today there are thousands of breweries around the world and thousands of different kinds of beer. Many breweries around the world offer tours where you can witness how that particular kind of beer is made. In addition, most breweries produce several different kinds of beer.
In the United States, the August Schell Brewing Company, located in New Ulm, Minnesota, is considered one of the best breweries in the United States. They have daily tours from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Terrapin Beer Company, located in Athens, Georgia, offers tours Thursday through Saturday at 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm. The Sprecher Brewing Company in Glandale, Wisconsin has tours on Friday at 4:00 pm and Saturday at 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 3:00 pm. Reservations are required for a tour of this brewery.
Some private companies have started up that offer scheduled brewery tours for a fee. Tours of this type might offer private or public brewery tours with a per person price or a group fee. These tours often include other amenities in addition to touring several breweries, such as tastings, a lunch, or souvenir glasses.
At one time, touring a brewery was just a way to get free beer, but that is not the case in the brewery tours of today. A tour of a brewery today might include not only the free beer, but perhaps a lesson in beer making, a restaurant, or a bar or pub where you can have lunch and a beer. All in all, taking a tour of a brewery today could be a great way to spend the afternoon.
