Tennessee State Museum

On the corner of Fifth and Deaderick streets hangs a life-size painting of Andrew Jackson painted by Ralph E. W. Earl. It was written home about in 1823 by a young boy who had visited a museum. This was the beginnings of the Tennessee State Museum which was opened in 1817 in the Nashville public square by the same person who painted Andrew Jackson, Ralph E.W. Earl.

The museum houses a variety of exhibits. The permanent exhibit "The First Tennesseans" shows the history of humans in the state. It began 15,000 years ago and continued through four periods. There were Prehistoric Indians existing in Tennessee.

One of the changing exhibitions the Tennessee State Museum offers is the Sharaku Interpeted by Japan's Contemporary Artists. This will be opening February 18, 2010.

One of the traveling exhibitions they offer is Bagels & Barbeque: The Jewish Experience in Tennessee; which is about the Jewish immigration to Tennessee and how this culture influenced the state.

The museum has a store for those visitors who wish to purchase souvenirs like crafts, jewelry, toys, and books. There are online photo galleries available intended for those seeking information about the museum which has thousands of visitors each year by patrons, school groups and others.

You can participate in a curriculum based tour hosted by museum educators and experience the exploration of famous Tennesseans like Davy Crockett, priceless artifacts and experience a civics lesson first-hand at the historic Tennessee State Capitol building. You can request a field trip online at their website.
