Champ, the Monster of Lake Champlain

The famous monster of Lake Champlain, otherwise known as Champ, a serpent-like creature with a dorsal fin and humps on it's back, can be placed in the same category as Nessy the Lochness Monster. While there has been over 300 sightings recorded of this cryptid, there has been no scientific proof that the famous Champ lives in the depths of Lake Champlain.

This monster, which some believe to be real and some believe to be folklore, is one of the most famous attractions of tourists to Lake Champlain in Burlington, Vermont. If there is a Champ, the species would have to have a population of about 500 to keep it from becoming extinct. Lake Champlain is a vast 120 mile freshwater lake spanning the U.S. and Canadian border. It reaches depths of 400 feet with a lot of wildlife to possibly sustain such a creature.

There are many theories of what Champ might be. Some think he is a sturgeon, a giant almost prehistoric fish. Currently, there are sturgeon living in Lake Champlain, and they can get to be quite large. There is another theory that Champ may be a primitive form of whale that is now thought to be extinct. There have been fossils of these whales found not far from Lake Champlain in Charlotte, Vermont. The dinosaur theory is another thought that Champ may have escaped extinction. Another very popular idea is that Champ is a plesiosaur, a type of prehistoric reptile that lived after the dinosaurs became extinct.

Whatever and if ever Champ is real, it has been a famed and sought after creature in New York, Quebec and Vermont. Recordings of Champ go back to Native Americans and continue onto this day. The quest for Champ and the scientific discovery of his species continues on.
