America has many wonderful zoos, but some set themselves apart with their amazing exhibits. California has two great zoos and both of them are in San Diego. The largest is the Disney San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park with over 4,000 animals of more than 800 species. The animals are placed as though they are in their native surroundings. From the atmosphere of the South American rain forest to the Arctic tundra, visitors will enjoy many unique locations. It also contains large aviaries. The other zoo is the Wild Animal Park, also in San Diego. It attracts more tourists and has animals from Africa, Europe, North and South America and Australia. It is based on a Nairobi village in Kenya and has a large Wgasa Bushline Railway covering 700 acres with a unique condor breeding area and rare hornbills.
Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, Florida covers 500 acres and is home to 1,700 animals and reptiles of 250 species. The Kilimanjaro Safari takes you through the African Savannah. A fascinating 14-story Tree of Life is located there with carvings and images of over 300 animals.
The Maryland Zoo, in Baltimore, is the third oldest zoo. It was organized in 1876 and covers over 160 acres. It has over 1,500 birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles of 200 species.
The Phoenix Zoo has a very unique resident, Ruby, the Asian Elephant. She came there as a baby in 1973. Ruby became famous for her paintings and has raised over $200,000 for the zoo.
