Today's Rodeo

Rodeos today are a big time sport that actually began out of necessity long ago. It began in Mexico and Spain where cattlemen would herd their cattle. Sometimes they would need to rope or tie down the steers. It progressed into what is now a highly competitive sport.

Rodeos will consist of bull riding, bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding and barrel racing. You will also find steer wrestling and tie-down roping. Some of the events will be timed events and other will be what are considered rough stock events.

Most of the rodeos in the United Stated are sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). The women's association is the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA). The majority of women who participate in rodeos tackle the barrel racing events, although some do roping and goat typing.

Even though rodeos are a popular sport with more than 600 professional rodeos held each year, they are not thought well of by all people. Many organizations which work to decrease the cruelty to animals feel that rodeo stock are being abused. The conditions which the rodeo association have for their animals has improved over the years. After all, in order to be able to perform and buck, an animal would need to be fed well and in good physical condition. The rodeo stock that is used in professional rodeos are all seen regularly by a vet.

You can travel far and wide and still find rodeos. They are held in many countries including Canada, Mexico, Australia and Chile.
