This historic museum had its beginnings in 1817, when it was opened on a public square. Its claim at that time was a life-size image of General Andrew Jackson. Amazingly, the same picture continues to hang in the museum’s new location today.

The Tennessee State Museum is one of the largest state museums in our nation. It covers more than 60,000 square feet of permanent exhibits and has 10,000 square feet of exhibits that change. There are also traveling exhibits for your viewing. The museum covers three floors and shows the history of the state of Tennessee. The Tennessee State Museum offers exhibits for the public from the following historical periods cover prehistoric, frontier, the age of Jackson, Antebellum, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Enjoy learning about Tennessee’s symbols and state history. A special exhibit at this museum is the area which describes our country’s military conflicts. It includes the battles from the Spanish-American War through World War II. The museum gift shop offers hand made crafts, jewelry and Tennessee souvenirs.
