Snorkeling is swimming while equipped with a facemask, a snorkel, swim fins, and possibly a wet suit. The snorkel is a tube in the shape of a “U," one end fits in the mouth while the other extends upwards. Snorkeling is an awesome way to observe underwater activity. This is a very common hobby in the tropics due to the vast array of marine wildlife. Snorkeling is also used in several underwater sports such as underwater hockey, and spear fishing.
Snorkeling has several techniques and there are different types of snorkels. First the use of a snorkel allows for the person snorkeling extending his underwater observations. However, they do need to come to the surface to breath. One technique to expel water from the snorkel is to come to the surface and blow the water out. Another is to expel the water prior to coming to the surface by tilting the head back and using remaining air to blow out, expelling the water while reaching the waters surface. This way is used often as that way the person snorkeling can replenish their air and return to their dive.
Competitive bog snorkeling has become a world class event. It started as a bar room conversation in 1976 in mid Wales, and now attracts more than 200 people a year. This bog sport, uses a snorkel, fins and a wet suit, the swimmer can only use the flippers to propel him through the sixty yard trench filled with water.
