Champ The Water Monster

Named after the French explorer Samuel De Champlain, Lake Champlain lies on the border of Vermont and New York and goes into Quebec, Canada. Champlain encountered the lake in 1609. Although not the largest lake in the United States compared to Lake Erie and Michigan, Lake Champlain is the largest fresh water lake in the United States. Chazy Reef, a reef found at Lake Champlain, is considered the oldest reef in the world. It's one of the few things studied at Lake Champlain. The most popular thing to be studied or researched at Lake Champlain is Champ the water monster.

Some people think the water monster lives in Lake Champlain while others don't. As they've never seen the monster, fact or fiction has yet to be determined. In 1883, Sheriff Nathan H. Mooney spotted a huge water serpent in the northwest part of the lake. Rising five feet above the water, the creature was 25 to 30 feet long. Mooney was close enough to see that there were round white spots inside the creature's mouth. The first dozen sightings preceded the Loch Ness by 50 years.

Everyone's description of Champ has been the same. Each story told of a sighting is consistent with the last. Many people describe the creature to be dinosaur-like and they all tell of the same features. In 1977, a resident of Connecticut took pictures of what she saw in the lake. Her photos confirmed the detail in which people expressed in their stories of the creature. Although some have tried to discredit her photos, they have been unsuccessful in doing so.
