Whitewater Rafting

White water rafting is an experience for those that want an adrenalin rush. Few other activities will offer you the excitement of riding a raft through rapids that are just waiting to get you wet. White water rafts range in size and carry from six to ten or more people. The guide or helmsman is in charge. Everyone else on board needs to listen carefully to his or her directions to paddle or backwater. You will work your paddle hard at times so being in fairly good physical shape can be a benefit. Safety equipment includes life jackets and helmets.

Many white water rafting locations are controlled by electric generating dams. The utility operators often cooperate with white water enthusiasts by releasing water through. The dams are timed for rafters to enjoy the rapids below the dam. For instance, the Deerfield River in Charlemont, Massachusetts has a white water section that is flooded at a morning or afternoon hour agreed on by the utility company and the local outfitters that provide guided rafting trips down this river.

Venues for white water rafting are everywhere. A quick check on the internet will locate countless locations for you to participate in this adventure. A classic location is to follow the route of the 1869 Powell expedition as he explored the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Be sure to book your trip well in advance though, as the waiting list can be as long as a year or more. If you can’t wait that long there are cancellations, but you have to check in often to take advantage of them.
