The Tennessee State Museum is located in Nashville, Tennessee and has been around since 1817. It was originally opened in the public square in Nashville. It is a very large museum with more than 60,000 square feet of exhibits. There is another area which contains exhibits that change from time to time. The Tennessee State Museum also has a traveling exhibit.
The museum consists of many different exhibits which are there permanently. Among those would be one about the first Tennesseans, a part regarding the Civil War, and also one about the new South.
The area with the first Tennesseans has a display of a mastodon from many thousands of years ago. You will also find a Dover flint mace and a shaman's medicine tube. Among the other items you might find interesting would be a dugout canoe that is a few hundred years old and some furniture that is homemade.
President Andrew Jackson was a large part of Tennessee history and you will be able to view his inaugural hat, along with other items. Andrew Johnson was also part of Tennessee history, especially since he became president after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and was the first president to be impeached, although he was later acquitted. The museum also contains items from the African-American Union soldiers and the flag of the Confederate raiders.
You will not want to miss the displays which showcase an Egyptian mummy which has been in Tennessee since the 1800s and the wonderful painting gallery which includes both landscapes and portraits.
