The Great Smoky Mountains serve as a boundary for Tennessee and North Carolina. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is over 800 miles with more than 500,000 acres of land. It has wonderful hiking trails that will enlighten many individuals both young and old.
Some of the trails that are well-known for great hiking include the Cades Cove and Abrams Falls Trail, which has a hiking trail that is five miles round trip. This is an excellent trail for beginners and families with small children. It will take approximately three hours to tour. Rainbow Falls Trail is somewhat challenging and will lead you to Mt. LeConte. The approximate travel time for the Rainbow Falls trail is an hour and a half. The Appalachian Trail is approximately 2,015 miles and runs through 14 states.
When hiking through the Smoky Mountains, all hikers should be prepared for changes in the climate due to upper and lower elevations. It is suggested to have extra clothing available for any type of weather, be it cold, hot or rainy. Hiking boots should be worn instead of tennis shoes so your ankles will have the proper support for the uneven trails.
Be sure and use safety precautions. Know what the weather conditions are supposed to be. Take along water and an emergency kit. Try and stay dry so you do not get hypothermia. Stay on the trail and with your group. If hiking alone, always be sure that at least three people know your route. Follow and obey all posted signs. Do not mess with any wildlife you come upon. Be sure to keep your distance and do not spook them as you do not know what the outcome would become.
