The Tennessee State Museum

With 60,000 square feet of permanent exhibits, Tennessee State Museum is a great tourist attraction, as well as a history of Tennessee from pre-colony times to the early 19th century. Today the museum has a pledge to obtain and preserve anything related to the history of the state. It also offers programs to enhance the education and enrichment of the visitors to the museum so they may learn about the state and the area. There are many historic figures that grace the native population of Tennessee, such as Andrew Jackson, Daniel Boone, Sam Houston, and Elvis Presley. These plus more are in the permanent exhibit. There is also a 10,000 square foot traveling museum to take some of their artifacts to other museums in the state. The permanent exhibit and the War Museum are always free admission.

The military museum commemorates foreign wars that men from Tennessee have fought in. It goes as far back as the French and Indian War, through The Civil War and World Wars I and II. A gun on the deck of the U.S.S. Tennessee fired the first shot in the Spanish-American War and it is housed in the museum. The section on WWII has General Eisenhower's jacket and a teletype telling the news of President Franklin Roosevelt's death. Outside the War Museum are tributes to Tennessee soldiers who died in WWI, the Korean War, and Vietnam.

Kids love the museum for many different things, but they are all in accord with their fascination of the 3,600 year old mummy, as well as the equipment from Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone. The museum provides a fun way to learn history.
