The Butterfly House in Missouri

Have you visited the Butterfly House and Bontanical Garden in Chesterfield, Missouri? They provide science and natural history learning experiences for the family. The Butterfly House was built to increase awareness of the natural habitat in which butterflies flourish. It was funded with private donations from foundations and membership support.

In June of 1997, ground was broken for the Butterfly House. With an 8,000 square foot Conservatory Garden that is protected within pieces of 4’X 6’ glass, the center of the garden reaches up 36 feet high at the apex and is one of the vaults designed to allow free flight for insects. The Butterfly House opened for the public on September 18, 1998, and provides educational opportunities for everyone of all ages. An outdoor area was dedicated in 2000, known as the Butterfly Garden, where educational programs and special events can be held. Here, visitors have the chance to witness butterflies in a native and tropical habitat.

A second expansion in 2001 opened the Emerson Lakeside Terrace, which serves as an area for special events, public and private. The Butterfly House participates with the BFCI (Butterfly Conservation Initiative) and became the only dedicated insect facility associated with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Next time you are planning your family vacation, check out the Butterfly House of Missouri and learn about these wonders of the insect world. The gardens are very beautiful and feature many different types of butterflies for your viewing pleasure. You will love all of the natural beauty of these insects.
