Hot potting means swimming in one of Earth's natural hot springs. Yellowstone National Park is a great place to go hot potting because some of the springs have great temperature for enjoyment. This activity is not legal, but it can be extremely dangerous and can lead to death of a person if the spring is too hot. One day in 1975, a person who worked at Yellowstone took a swim in the spring. The spring ended up being 179 degrees Fahrenheit. The employee's body was found days later.
The lesson learned here is that the first touch of the water does not mean that the whole body of water is that temperature. Therefore, people need to be very careful or they will end up dead also. Hot springs flow into the cool springs, such as Shoshone Creek, and this water is great for foot soothing and for muscle pain. These springs are legal and a lot safer to swim or take a dip in. In the year 1981, two people were at the Fountain Paint Pot in Yellowstone and some bad luck set in.
A dog (owned by one of the men) jumped into 202 degree Celestine Pool. Of course, the dog was yelping and the owner jumped in. The dog did not make it out alive and the owner ended up being blinded from the pool, with third degree burns over his whole body. Hot spring resorts are available around the park and Chico Hot Springs in Pray, Montana is not far from Gardiner. Despite the potential dangers, hot potting in Yellowstone is one of the most relaxing experiences you can find.
