Snorkeling

What you see above the water at beautiful vacation spots doesn’t compare to what you will see below the water as you enjoy the relatively inexpensive hobby that snorkeling provides. There are many articles to tell you how to snorkel available. Beyond that, there are many instructors at vacation spots who are more than happy to show you and your family how.

The equipment required is rather minimal. It consists of a mask, snorkel and fins, and if you want to really relax as you snorkel, get an inflatable vest, sometimes known as a “horse collar”. Learning to use the mask and snorkel is not difficult, it just requires a little practice. Most importantly, have a professional assist you in purchasing your equipment for a proper fit. A mask should be able to adhere to your face without the strap after you inhale while having the mask on. You must learn how to “blast” your snorkel. This involves blowing into your snorkel in a rapid burst to push any water out before attempting to inhale. After blasting your snorkel, take an easy breath in and do it again. Always leave some air in your lungs so you can blast your snorkel if it should become necessary. Learn to use your fins effectively. Don’t “bicycle” with your legs, don’t slap the fins on top of the water, and don’t use your arms. All your propulsion should be done with strong leg kicks from the hip, with your arms at your sides.

Many tours and travel sites specialize in snorkeling. Knowing you are in for a wonderful experience is great motivation. Snorkeling is a great skill to have, and if you wish to proceed on to scuba diving, it is a required step.
