Yellowstone Hot Potting

Hot potting is the joy of soaking in steaming water, where cold rivers meet hot springs. Yellowstone National Park is a very popular place for hot potting in the United States. You will need to do a bit of hiking within Yellowstone to hot pot, but the experience is worth it.

There are only three legal hot pots in Yellowstone: the Three Rivers Junction, Boiling River near Mammoth, and Madison Hot Pot by Madison Campground. Other places are dangerous to attempt hot potting in. Most hot springs create pots with temperatures above 170 degrees Fahrenheit, and some pools are dangerous, acidic, and reek of sulfur.

Near the north entrance of the park, you can drive to Mammoth Hot Springs. Then you can hike half a mile upstream to the hot pot on Boiling River. In winter, you can cross-country ski to the steaming pool. To get to the Three River Junction Hot Pot, hike the Bechler River Trail, beginning two miles east of Old Faithful. It's 14.1 miles each way to this junction. Hikers camp at the hot pot as it is the halfway point of the trail. You'll view Lone Star Geyser, Bechler River at Shoshone Geyser and Douglas Knob en route.

The spiritual revitalization you receive by soaking in the warm spring water in the wilds of Yellowstone are feelings that will last a lifetime. On your next trip to Yellowstone, don't miss out on this natural spa treatment surrounded by the true beauty of the United States' wilderness.
