Snorkeling can be a marvelous chance to experience Mother Nature’s wonders for a family vacation or for wonderful seclusion with your special loved one. The choices of where to go are virtually endless.
A very good choice would be the coast of the Yucatan near Cancun, Mexico. Here you can escape the snows of winter with a vacation that will bring memories for years. Swim with dolphins, kayak to secluded coves, or explore the rain forest. These are only a few of the available activities.
You could also take your disposable underwater camera to Hanauma Bay on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. This shallow bay was formed when one side of a volcano collapsed into the sea allowing the water to enter. Get there early to find good parking and descend to the beach below by shuttle vehicle or walking The variety of fish and plants you will find is spectacular. Be ready when a sea turtle swims by and poses for photos.
Just a tad closer to home, for those on the East Coast anyway, the more affordable beaches of Puerto Rico offer some really great snorkeling. Try the Islands of Culebra and Vieques just off the southeast tip of Puerto Rico. The beaches that were once used as training for amphibious landings by U.S. Marines and U.S. Navy are now beautiful tropical beaches. Those on the south shore of Vieques are still known by their code names of Red Beach, Blue Beach, and Green Beach. These are now places that provide truly superior opportunities for snorkeling among the reefs and around the small islands.
