Baits For Fishing

Bait fishing as we know it here in North America is the oldest method of fishing. Bait fishing is called bottom fishing in England. Common baits that are used are minnows, flies, insects, shrimps, crayfish, leeches and cut fish. Commercially made bait is also referred to as dough balls.

Cut bait is commonly used to catch catfish or carp. Leeches are used for freshwater or walleye and northern pike. Crayfish are good to catch carp and bullheads. Strips of fish are used to catch barracudas.

There are many types of bait out there. You can even find recipes for homemade bait online. One of the more infamous recipes consists of flour, water, and garlic. You can use other seasonings or flavored gelatin to alter the taste of the bait. Cook all of this over the stove for about five minutes until it forms a ball and let it cool.

Sometimes you do not even have to use bait. One man said he had left his bait at the shop and he used his undershirt to cut it into eight inch strips of material to drag behind his boat to catch barracuda and other fish. One of the tips for catching fish is to use something instead of commercially made bait, because most people use store bought bait. Using something out of the ordinary is the key to catching more fish, because they are looking for something different. Even if you do not have bait you can still use your imagination; look in your fridge and use what you have to catch fish.
