The Smokey Mountains are among the oldest mountains in the world, and are in the southern part of the Appalachian Mountains. They border the western side of the Blue Ridge Mountains between Tennessee and North Carolina.
The Great Smokey Mountains National Park was formed in the 1930s, and is more than 591,000 acres. The park has over 9 million visitors a year, the most visitors of any national park. With that many visitors, you still will not be bothered by a large number of people when hiking. In fact, on some trails, you might not see anyone. There are many trails to hike, depending on your wishes. The lowest trail is about 840 feet at the western edge of the park at Abrams Creek, and the highest trail goes up to 6,643 feet at the summit of Clingmans Dome. The park has more than 800 trails to hike, over 2,100 rivers and streams, many spots to have a picnic, and even a possible swim or two can be had in the abundant water.
When hiking, there are many things you should know and do before begin your hike. You should be in good physical condition, use good judgment, have proper clothing, and pay attention to your surroundings when you’re hiking. Be sure to tell someone where you are going and about your time of return. Let that person know when you have returned. Take plenty of water and high energy snacks. Do not approach wild animals, as they can be dangerous. Make sure that you check the weather before you leave and dress appropriately.
