Snorkling Safety

The principal safety precautions for snorkeling have not changed since man used reeds to suck in air from above the water. While exploring underwater, it is essential that you remain aware of what you are doing. You will enjoy snorkeling for a long time if you follow some very basic rules.

You should never snorkel alone. As in scuba diving, it is always best to have a buddy nearby. You never known when trouble might occur. You never want to go out too far or in rough seas so that you run out of energy. If you become exhausted, float on your back for a few minutes. Some snorkelers use a light flotation device If you are diving too close to rocks, waves can easily toss you onto them or into barnacle covered pilings. As you enjoy the dazzling marine animals and plants, be careful what you touch. Fragile corals and plants provide shelter and nutrition for sea life. Always be on the alert for sea creatures that may be watching you with a meal in mind. Never stick your hand into holes or crevices. You never know what may be hiding inside. Be mindful that you may disturb some hidden rays. Stinging anemones will warn you to keep you hands to yourself. Banging yourself on hardy corals or rocks can result in nasty cuts or scrapes.

Even if you are using the newest state of the art equipment, you need to keep it in good condition. Never stray from your buddy and it is unwise to go snorkeling if you cannot swim. You need to obey these simple rules so that you can enjoy the underwater world off glorious beaches anywhere in the world.
