Let's Talk Bait

When fishing it is always important to have bait; you can't catch anything with nothing. It is equally important to know the fish you are planning to catch and what types of bait that particular fish goes after.

Some popular live baits are insects including crickets and grasshoppers, flies and insect larvae, slugs, as well as traditional earthworms also known as dew worms and night crawlers. Many of these bug types can be caught around the area you will be fishing as well as your own backyard. Night crawlers can be easily found on a moist lawn after dark with a bucket and a flashlight. Compost piles are another huger bug-bait attraction site. If you can find a fresh wasp nest full of grubs and manage not to be stung too much, the larvae inside are great for fishing as well. Other live bait types are minnows, crayfish, frogs, chub and shad. If you don't have the time or don't want to find and catch your own live bait then there also bait shops that carry all these as well as a wide selection of others.

Prepared bait is bait that has been previously made for your use. Some prepared baits are bread balls, cheese balls, cereal balls, kernel corn, baked potato pieces, hot dogs, chicken entrails, salmon eggs, and stink baits. Many of these can be found in your local grocery store or even your own home, as well as for sale in bait shops. Artificial bait is bait that is man-made, such as plastic insects like flies and worms. Other artificial baits are lures, small jigs, streamers and spinners, spoons, and streamer flies. All these as well as many more are also readily available at bait shops.
