You can now purchase rocks from many stores who have found that people love to collect them. There many books on the market can help you to learn how to identify the rocks and minerals. These guides give you information on types of rocks, their names, what they look like, locations where they can be found and other characteristics.
Local museums offer additional information on rocks, minerals and geology. Museum interns and researchers can any answer questions you may have and may be able to advise you of local spots to find rock certain rocks and can answer questions about rocks that you have already collected.
There are many distinct clubs for people who consider themselves rock hound's. Check with your local museum, college or university for more information. There are also clubs online that may give you information about groups of rock hounds or collectors in your area. Clubs will give you information on local rock collection sites and provide a group meeting one of those spots to discuss and study the rocks in person.
