Cheese Tours

Places like Vermont, Wisconsin, and Northern California have small family farms that make cheese in small batches every day. Most of the small family farms offer cheese tours, where visitors can see how cheese is made and even sample some.

The US and France are the two leading producers of cheese in the world. Much of the cheese in the US comes from Wisconsin, and Wisconsin cheese comes in about 350 varieties. Many of the cheese making operations in Wisconsin were started by Swiss immigrants to the US around the turn of the 20th century. Wisconsin cheese tours are among the largest in the country. Check ahead with the farm, whose cheese tour you’d like to visit. Some require reservations, while others don’t.

Vermont is famous for a few things; beautiful fall foliage, maple syrup and great cheese. Visiting Vermont is popular in the fall with all the colors of the leaves changing and a cheese tour would be a great addition to any trip. You can enjoy a sampling of the cheeses at the local farms and see how the cheeses are hand waxed. Several Vermont farms also produce pure maple syrup as well. Hours and cheese tours can vary by season here with the weather, so call ahead to the cheese tour to make sure they are operating and if they require reservations.

Northern California is quickly becoming a popular place for cheese making. Cheese pairs naturally with the wine that is plentiful in the region, and like many of the vineyards, the cheese farms are family operations. Many offer cheese tours daily, and the weather is less of a concern here. The other advantage to a cheese tour in Northern California is that the tastings usually are accompanied with local wine.
