Kids love to explore. What's better than to spend time with them outdoors searching for artifacts? It doesn’t really need to be anything of importance, but to a child finding a cool looking rock or leaf inspires their curiosity. If your child is into exploring, introduce them to fossil and rock hunting. It will be fun for both of you.
At first you wouldn’t need too much, but maybe a pair of boots you don’t mind getting muddy and a place to go to dig. This could be place where erosion occurs on a daily basis, like a coast line or cliffs around the beach areas. There might be a quarry in your area. In these places you wouldn’t need much to get started. You might use a hammer and a pick, a small shovel and brush to remove excess dirt.
When you find yourself getting more interested in fossil hunting, there are camps and classes you can sign up for to learn more. They are very interesting and you will find out about the things you need to know about venturing on your own. For instance, you might need a helmet and an outdoor safety vest to keep you safe and also to keep what you find in a safe place. You will also need some safety goggles and a hand held magnifying lens so you can see what you find. There is a lot more equipment that you can use to find what you're looking for so don’t give up.
