Rodeo Yesterday and Today

Rodeos of yesterday started in Spain later migrating to the United States. It's based on the skills of cowboys and cowgirls. Back in the mid-1800s, after a long cattle drive or round up, they needed to have some fun and relax. The cowboys would test their skills and see who was the best. The rodeo was much like a big country picnic back then, with a giant barbecue after a day of riding and roping.

Rodeos are noted to be an informal event where family and friends could come together to enjoy the day. The rodeo became more formal as the rodeos started traveling and were known as Wild West Shows. Even Buffalo Bill had his own rodeo, with Native Americans riding out on horses shooting guns and giving a performance full of excitement and entertainment. This was truly entertainment back then and people came from miles around to enjoy the show. Back then it would cost maybe a nickel to get in.

Rodeos are particularly popular today throughout the Western United States. They still excite people that come to see them. With bucking horses, roping and bull riding, people still enjoy the thrills of the rodeo. The excitement is still there from yesterday's rodeos but there have been many changes. The rodeo is now a multi-million dollar sport and the cowboys and cowgirls compete for top cash prizes.

They still have all the events like bronc and bull riding, team roping and calf roping and the women’s barrel races. They have something for everyone. Rodeos are here to stay as an exciting part of our history that shall not be forgotten.
