Snorkeling is a way to view the ocean bottom while swimming on top of the water. A snorkel is a tube with a mouth piece. You fit the mouthpiece in your mouth and the tube will be facing up. Then you put your face in the water and you will be able to breathe. In order to snorkel successfully you will also need a mask and fins so you can swim smoothly through the water and clearly see what is underneath.
For the mask a perfect fit is what you want. Try some on, and the one that sticks on your face without falling off is the one you want. It must have a good seal around your face and a feel that is comfortable. For the snorkel make sure the mouthpiece is comfortable in your mouth, and get a strap to hold the snorkel to your mask.
For buying or renting the fins again comfort is the major key. One way to go is to where booties under your fins for more protection against blisters. The length and shape of the fin determines what kind of swimming you will be doing. A large fin will allow you to swim faster but will also take more strength to get you through the water. They also have fins called Force Fins. The Force Fin has a smaller fin that is soft and wearing it is comfortable. This fin is also open toed which provides more comfort to the wearer.
