Carlsbad Caverns is one of the biggest and most impressive caves in the United States. Located in the southern section of beautiful New Mexico, the caverns are seeped in a rich history dating back to prehistoric times as even then humans were fascinated by the deep caves. Hundreds of thousands of years have left their marks on Carlsbad, but the caverns remain as remarkable today as they have ever been.
There are two basic entrances into Carlsbad Caverns, the Big Room and the Natural Entrance Route. You can purchase tickets every day of the year, except for Christmas Day, and tickets are good for a total of three days. These are the type of tickets that you will need if you have elected to see the caverns through a self-guided tour. However, it is highly recommended that you take a guided tour to truly appreciate all that is amazing about Carlsbad. Another not-to-be-missed event at Carlsbad Caverns is the Bat Flight. Visitors are seated in an amphitheater to watch hundreds and hundreds of bats leave the caverns on a nightly basis. Early morning risers can also see the bats returning to the caverns, as they dive down hundreds of feet to enter the cave.
You should plan on wearing a light sweater or jacket, as the caverns remain around 56 degrees inside year round. You will also want shoes with good, thick rubber soles for all of the walking and climbing that you will be doing. Keep in mind that children 3 years and under are not permitted on any of the guided tours and that baby strollers are not allowed at all. By being properly prepared you can enjoy one of the natural wonders that has been fascinating mankind for a millennia.
