The Great Outdoors

There are many ways to experience your own outdoor adventures. Whether your interests lie in biking, hiking, camping, or caving, plan ahead. Just how thoroughly do you want to explore the outdoors? Do you want deluxe camping accommodations, complete with tents, gourmet meals and entertainment? Many companies offer a combination of such services. All you’ll need is the proper clothing and footwear.

If you’re independent you’ll need to provide your own equipment, carry it, cook on it and clean up after! State and National Parks are well marked and can offer you information on the length and difficulty of trails, as well as weather conditions. Trails are marked specifically for hiking, biking or overnight camping. Remember to stay within your experience level, and never go alone!

Caving, or spelunking, is a dangerous sport even if you’re experienced. Check with local caving clubs. They offer caving adventures such as cave exploration and cave diving experiences for the truly adventurous. Old jeans, a sweatshirt, gloves and hiking boots are fine to start – you’re going to get muddy and wet. Remember, smaller groups will move more quickly and you’ll generate more heat. You’ll need a helmet, preferable a climbing helmet with quick release and mounted headlight. Local clubs are usually willing to loan you a helmet to start. Always bring a couple of your own sources of light. A second long-lasting LED attachable headlight and another flashlight are both good calls. Caves are an alien environment. There is no light.

Whether hiking, biking, caving or camping – follow a few simple rules: stay on trails, don’t touch fragile petroglyphs or cave formations, and take only your trash with you. Rock collecting is not permitted in State or National Parks. It is illegal!
