The National Civil War Musuem

One hundred fifty years have gone by since the Civil War and many of the war battlegrounds are celebrating special events.   The National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania opened in 200l.  It puts the Civil War into chronalogical order of the battle events.

I was impressed how clearly the pre-civil war ideas created so much animosity and how those ideas the people beleived in led to war.  Fortunately, our president's focus was to keep the United States" united," which he was able to do. Many of the generals trained together and were taught the same fighting tactics.  The Civil War Museum tells many more stories from written words of the soldiers and the ideas the people held hat were worth giving thier lives over. Brother against brother and friend against friend made many a battle diffacult to handle emotionally.

The museum displays 24,000 items in 17 galleries.  It could take you two to three hours to soak up all the Civil War information.  Each year, the National Civil War Museum focuses on a specific era of the war and exchanges items with the Smithsonian Institute.  There will be Living History weekends, speakers, bus trips & more.

The best information can be seen on thee web site:  nationalcivilwarmuseum.org

Baseball; Not Just the Great American Pastime

Baseball is long recognized as the great American pastime, but it really is a world wide sport. Countries in Central and Southern America, the Caribbean, and Asia are all involved in this sport. In the 18th century, baseball developed in North America. By the late 19th century it became the United States national sport. In the United States, Major League Baseball(MLB)is divided into two leagues. They are the National League and the American League.

The oldest league in MLB is the National League (NL), or the senior league. This league began its growth in February 1876. Expansion continued in this league for 60 years, adding several teams such as the New York Mets, San Diego Padres, and the Montreal Expos, who have since moved to Washington D.C. and been renamed the Nationals. Then, in 1993, the Colorado Rockies, Florida Marlins were added, followed by the Milwaukee Brewers and the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1998. The Brewers transferred from the American League (AL) to the NL in 1998 to provide 16 teams.

The junior league, known as the American League (AL), came into existence in 1901. This league has been a steady performer in the World Series, winning 61 of the 103 championships. This league does have a Canadian team in the Toronto Blue Jays. The growth of the AL resulted in many areas receiving a professional baseball team. The last to join the league was the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, who joined in 1998.  During the early growth of this league they only faced the NL in exhibition games or the World Series. That all changed in 1997, when the NL an AL played inter-league games to promote interest before the World Series. There is one more significant difference between the leagues; in the NL the pitcher must bat, however, in the AL the designated hitter was employed to make the game more exciting in 1973.

Sunscreen

Can you beleive it?  Now the Environmental Working Group released  a scare that sunscreen could cause Cancer.

A report was released on May 24th 2010 questinoing the effectiveness of sunblock.  Five hundred sunblock products were tested and only 39 were approved.

There are many chemicals in sunblock to make the ointment clear in color and easy to glide on your skin. Many of the older sunblocks were opaque and these seem to be the best.  The best choices should contain Zinc or Titanium.

Many of the sunscreens, we use today, have a vitamin A compound called Retinyl palmitate and another called oxybenzone.  The article says these are the worst chemicals because retinyl could be photocarcinogenic.  This could cause Cancer when exposed to the sun.  Sprays and powders are not good if inhaled either.

If you want to find out about the sunscreen you are using, go to EWG.org  Here you can type in your favorite sunscreen and see how dangerous it is.  Several sunblock lotions were mentioned.
Burn Out Clean and Clear Zinc Oxide Sunblock SPF 32 which goes on clear.
Eucerin Face Sensitive Skin Everyday Protection Lotion SPF 30
ZinClear SPF 30  orNo fragrnace SPF +30 Sunscreen lotion

It is still important that we use a sunscreen to protect us from ultraviolet rays or wear protective clothing  says the Centers for Disease Control and for Prevention of skin Cancer.  We are too trusting to think that what we rub on our skin may not be chemically good for us.  What next?

A salute to the men who fight for our freedom

Every day tens of thousands of Americans put their lives on the line to protect freedom.

On every continent across the globe they serve and protect, stepping into harms way to help keep freedom alive. For hundreds of years they have stood strong and proud, fighting to keep us safe. From the first colonies to the global community we now know, these men and women have selflessly given their lives to help build what we take for granted today.

The birth of the American military machine took place in 1775 to protect the colonists. Today there are countless thousands of brave men and women risking their lives every day. They leave their homes and loved ones behind to serve and protect our freedom. They are miles from home, facing struggles and challenges every hour of every day.

We salute these heroes with holidays and parades, and write songs and stories to praise their sacrifice. Our country has constructed great monuments in their honor, building long walls to hold the names of those who did not return.
Countless groups and organizations have been established to help them and respond to their needs. A country built on the blood and bodies of millions of men and women must never forget the sacrifice they have made.

Today more then ever in our countries history, these men and women need our support and blessings. Even though they are in Iran & Irak or another area, they still bleed and die. They come home broken and scared from their toils.

We must all remember them, welcome them home with open arms and caring hearts. They are the ones who put their lives on hold. They left their husbands and wives and children, so that we would not have to.

When you look up into the warm evening sky, give thanks to those who are not here.
